For solo plus chorus, this arrangement takes its cue from the elegaic feel of the traditional Irish song on which it is based. The backing starts off as a gentle pulsation in open harmonies, and develops into mysterious Phyrgian harmonies as the story becomes more poignant. The soloist starts off telling the narrative, but hands this over to the chorus to take off in soaring modal melismas, finally taking the story back in the final verse over an atmospheric sound-wash.
